I had a problem about 2 months ago with my external hard drive then i had my comp wiped and it doesn't install anymore whenever i go on to control panel and go on add hardware it doesn't find it then when i go onto a list of hardwares available it doesn't have my hard drive name or anything just random letters and numbers with a :excl: before them, it can't install even though i have a disk it is only for win98 when mine is winxp, can i reformat it somehow?

sounds like you need to find the drivers for the hdd. Try going on the hdd manufacturer's website to find the drivers.

WOW... one hell of a run on sentence you have there. Punctuation is much appreciated.

It's possible that your external drive is broken. Have you tried it in a different computer?

Sorry, it's been so long and been doing stuff with my life, anyway.

I can get the driver but i dunno what to do with it afterwards, and it does the same on my mates computer so it isn't my comp it's the hard drive, so anyone know what to do with the driver?

Please tell us what kind of drive it is. Is it USB connected?

Sounds like a dead drive, and if it isn't - get rid of it anyway. It sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed. I had to install it before my external hard drive would work.

This thread is long dead - I'm not sure why it was bumped by Cibo in the first place (should know better...). I'm guessing he found a solution, whatever it was.
