Are there any ps2 emulators that work properly, and would they be able to play on my pc with an athlon 64 @2.5ghz, 7800gtx and 2gb ram?

pcsx2 is the closest to working although 99% games will not run correctly.
Generally, intel dual core processes work the best though.

Why is it taking so long for an emulator? The ps2's been out longer than 6 years.

because software is not everything hardware has something to do with it too

I would prefer buying PS2 consoles than waiting for a working emulator if I am you.

I'll probably just wait for the ps3 since it has full hardware emulation of the ps2, I would've just liked to be able to play ff12 without having to buy a ps2 again or wait months. I suppose though that now full emulation is in the ps3 it kind of makes 6 years of work trying to make an emulator complete waste of time.

full emulation is in the ps3 it kind of makes 6 years of work trying to make an emulator complete waste of time. Why? the atari emulator came out way after its time, so did nes, an snes etc... One of the only emulators to emulate a system before its time was up was the n64 (ultreHLE) and that cause big problems for the system. The idea of emulation is not to get sh*t for free or before their time is done, its really much more then that.

If you would have thought ten seconds before posting that, you would have known that's bullshit.
The PS3's PS2 emulation is hardware emulation. A chip is emulating the PS2, not a program, like PCSX.
Even if Sony would have done it by software, it wouldn't run on a PC and they would never release it.
