i have a video and it has a song
is there a way i can take the song from the video and have it as a sound file (wav,mp3 etc.)?

It depends. What's the format of your video? AVI, WMV, MPG?

If it's .avi,why bother recording when you can strip teh sound from teh video stream with VirtualDub ?

Open your file in VDub then go to File > Save WAV.
Recompress with any wav2mp3 or whatever you like.

That's exactly what I was going to say. AVI is no more than a container, like a box that holds video and audio files.

There's an excellent one called "avi2wav". Google it.

Since I already use it for ripping CDs, I use CDex (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/).
