I know this is far fetched that any of us will ever be in a survival situation but I would like to know what you know about surviving the wilderness.
Climate : sub tropics to thick forest
Weather range : From sun to hail
Tools : your bare hands

I've been to a semi-survival situation. For five days in the "wild" we had only canned food and rope tents =_=
I dont recomment this to anyone unless you are prepared to catch a cold after the fifth day...
Overall it was fun along with the other things we had to do.

I think if forced I could survive for a while. I have learned a few tricks (thanks to my husband) about survival. I could hunt and kill and cook without a problem. I would not starve.
Of course I would die without my internet though :P

Do you have a hunting knife?

Don't need a knife. There are lots of other ways to keep from starving. And from freezing.

A nice sharp stone will do the trick. Just as good as a knife.

to many of ur pleasure, i think i would die, even with a knife and stone, but the thought of getting home and playing my ps2 might save my life

the key to survival is to get lots of water... you can live for weeks without food, but only a short time without the wet stuff

how many days can we go without water?
Lefteris_D
May 3rd, 2004, 21:31
I think it's 10 days but I'm not sure. It depends on the conditions.

10 days seems a bit much even in wet, cold conditions... i was thinking about 2 or 3 tops

I think its Five days
I heard it was 7 days however I don't know for a fact. There are so many nice tricks to acquiring water though you shouldn't have to go that long.
-In the woods, cut a grapevine close to the ground and the water that the vine has stored will leak out.
-For food, follow an animal. Anything that animal eats you can eat. And chances are that animal will know where water is too.
(Just a couple things to think about ^^ )

at most i probably can survive quite a time in the wilderness. i go outside a lot so i kinda adapt to the surroundings
You could send my brother into the wilderness for a month and he'd probably come back 10 pounds heavier

to survive 10 days without water... I would need 10 six packs of sweet PEPSI.
I don't know if anyone has told you, but there is water in pepsi

Interesting, i've been researching lately and it is ten days in the desert none the less. And following animals to food isn't a good idea either, they tend to eat poisonous stuff as well. So try the method i was taught. First you find a plant that seems edible, then see if it causes any skin irritation by spreading some on your arm, if nothing try your lips, then try eating some a small portion, if nothing then it should be fine.
All animals should be fine, except maybe in the tropics.

This is cringeworthy.

As I said I wasn't sure about the # of days without water, but as for following the animals think about it...if an animal is in its natural habitat it will know what it can eat and what it cannot. It is not going to eat anything that will harm it. A bear is a wonderful example...it will only eat berries and such that it knows is ok.
If you are in the desert and have a canteen (I know..not always the case but) you can actually set that that canteen in the sun to collect water. It will sweat inside.

and if you have a tarp or something, you can collect dew
You don't need a tarp for that. Just use large plant leaves.
onewecallgod
May 6th, 2004, 00:48
sure, but leaves arent usually in the form of a bowl shape to collect the dew
And people getting lost in the wilderness with a tarp is common ?
You don't need bowl shaped leaves. You can collect enough leaves, then some loose root, or vine, or other such thing and fashion a bowl out of it.

tarp, waterproof jacket, tent canvas (used like a tarp) thing should all work

in some deserts i heard it gets really cold in the night. because of the lack of moisture to hold heat, much of it gets lost. is this true?
It does get very cold in some deserts

We always live in the city, and seldom go out to see the wilderness...
After all, there is nothing could be called "wilderness..."
Every place has been developed... building everywhere...
But if you think how about me in the wilderness with bare hand?
Well, kill me, and it would be a relief... :(
