i'm new here and would like to get an emulator going. i've been reading up on them and they seem quite involved. to my understanding, you need both rom and .chd files? what else am i missing?

You will need an emulator and roms. Thats all.

CHD files are only needed in MAME and ZiNc for games that have a harddisk.
It is advised to use a ROMmanager for arcade emulation.
