I have Windows Media Player 11, so I'm not sure if this works:
Click on the visualization area (the big one with the funky colors and waves) and click "Album Art". If that doesn't work, re-add your music with the Media Library and make sure the cover is in the same album folder.
With Windows Media Player 11 all you need to do is to copy and paste the pic directly from anywhere to the album icon.
Of course, to get Windows Media Player 11 you need a legal Windows XP.

Now try this:
Go to your Media Library, select your list of songs on Windows Media Player, right click on them and choose "Advanced Tag Editor", then click the pictures tab and add the cover.
