multiplayer on the GBA visual boy advance emu

I have been trying to play multiplayer on the roms i have for the visual boy advance but cant. The emu persistantly keeps searching for a connection between two GBA's, i have tried everything does anybody know how to do play multiplayer on this emu! please help me
