Webpage security

Is there a way to put security settings on one folder to ensure not just anyone can access that webpage? I would like to be able to assign usernames and password to that one folder so that only certain people can access it.

If you are running Apache as a web server you need to find a tutorial about .htaccess files.

We are running IIS actually. Any advice for that?

I suppose it is not as easy as a right click on the "Folder name" folder and choosing some security setting?
