starting from save point

i am using VISUAL BOY and i am having some trouble opening the game from the files that appear on my destop. i have tried all the files there but i get some box that says it doesn't recognize the file. can someone please tell me what i can do.

You have to start up the ROM first.
Then press F1 to load the save.

i didnt save with F1 so hat can i do? i have these 2 files on my destop. one ends with .sgm and the other with .sav
i have tried both

Those aren't save states, those are game saves
Put those in the same folder you put your ROMs in then play your game.

And start the game first.
I really hope you're not double-clicking on them.
