Sega Genesis Action Replay please help

ok this is gonna sound pretty dumb but,i downloaded the Action replay rom for sega genesis,i know how to imput codes,but what do you do when you are finished? do you load the game or what???

I don't think it's of any use to load an action replay in an emulator. I think the emulator needs to have a built in function for a cheat device to be able to use the codes. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
