Emulator Help

I'm a n00b to emulators and don't even have one at the moment. What I'm wondering is if I need to purchase anything to run them. Do I need a controller or will the games just play with my keyboard? Once I download the emulator and game, can I just play or do I need to order something? Thanks for any help.

Almost all emulators can be played with just the keyboard and just your standard equipment (if you meet the systems requirements, that is!).
If you're a real newbie, check EasyEmu (http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/) for some good pointers ;)
