Can you use a USB controller with project64 and if you can, which one is the best choice?

Yes, use somthng with analog sticks, like the PS2, which should be about $15

i would buy one of those $20 adapters that let you hook up a real n64 and ps2 controller to them.

I just bought an adapter from radioshack. The cover says psx to usb, but in the manual it lists both ps1/ps2 controllers work and it does. They were $10, very good price. I use logitech wireless controller with it and it has worked perfectly

For Project64, the best would obviously be an adapter for a N64 joypad. But since these adapters (and N64 joypads!) are a lot more expensive than PSX ones, PSX-USB is your best option.

you can buy used n64 controllers at ebay or at game stores like gamestop/eb games for a few bucks. I'm not sure how much the adapters are though

Here in Holland the adapters are not available and the controllers are at least 25 Euros (2nd hand)!
