First of all, MAME is an arcade emulator that can be a little confusing to use. These step by step instructions should be able to help you get it going.
1. Download MAME version .1XX
2. Create a folder in C:. Name it MAME
3. Download a MAME game and put it in the roms folder in the MAME folder and DON’T CHANGE THE NAME
4. If you are using Windows 95/98/ME click the start menu and hit run and type command. If you are using Windows XP click the start menu and type cmd.
5. When the command prompt opens up type in cd/mame. Now, you should see C\:MAME>
6. Now type in mame (the name of the .zip file) :excl: THERE IS A SPACE INBETWEEN MAME AND THE NAME OF THE GAME. For example if you wanted to play donkey kong (the .zip file should be dkong) you would type in mame dkong. Then hit enter. Depending on the speed of your computer it could take anywhere from 3 to 30 seconds to open.
7. OK so now you are in MAME, good job. Now you are going to want to change the controls. If you just want to use the keyboard, hit the tab button and a menu screen will come up. You are going to want to hit Input (general) and player 1 controls. Change the controls and then hit escape until the menu screen goes away. To start the game insert a coin the default is 5 and then hit 1 to start the game. And you are done.
8. If you want to use a joystick, this can be confusing. First you need to create a configuration file. To do this type in on the command prompt mame.ini. I think that’s how you do it but I’m not sure because I already created one and I’m not going to create another one because it might screw something up. Now once you created mame.ini go into your MAME folder and you should see mamel.ini. Click on it. Go down near the bottom to where it says input device options. Where it says joystick change 0 to 1 (or 2, 3, 4 etc. depending on how many you have). To change the controls follow directions in step 7.
9. :D Congratulations, you have configured your MAME, GOOD JOB.
