My computer has
pentium III 500 mhz
512 mb ram
Flash sound card
no sound card (proprietry computer HP)
10 gig HDD
What upgrades if any do I need to emulate most N64, PS1, gameboy advance at an acceptable speed ?
should I invest in CPU or VID.CARD or do I need to upgrade both

Perhaps both, if you have enough budget.

I have been told my motherboard wont support more than 800mhz CPU. can anyone suggest a cheap video card that will allow me to play N64 with 500mhz CPU ???

I must say you need a very fast computer to emulate N64's hardware and it goes like this:

# The system requirements of Project64 are high. Don't expect games to run well or at all if your PC doesn't meet these requirements: Pentium III 600 Mhz or better
# 128 Mb. RAM or more
# Fast video card with 16 Mb. Video RAM or more
# Windows 95/98/Me
# DirectX 6.0 (latest version of DirectX recommended)
Project64 works best with these video cards:
# TNT, TNT 2, GeForce, GeForce 2, ATI Radeon
Project64 does not work well with these video cards:
# Matrox G200 and G400 (blending errors)
# ATI Rage Pro (misses some 3D functionality)
# 3DFX Voodoo Banshee (has bad DirectX drivers)
# 3DFX Voodoo 1 or 2 (secondary 3D cards are not supported)

For a smooth emulation I'd recommend:

- Intel Pentium 4 1.8 GHz or above.
- 256 of RAM.
- ATI or GeForce brand video cards with at least 64 MB.

I have "Matrox Graphics MGA-G2" , is this the cause of all my emulation problems

matrox cards were once good but are now considering todays standards crap.

you might as well just buy a whole new computer. any videocard upgrade you do will help, but will also be bottlenecked by your slow cpu. the max amount of performance you can get is fairly low

500 mhz??

get a new comp, seriously.
there is no upgrading that.
youd be lucky to get $50 out of your machine.

also, there really is no video card that would help you any. The cheapest cards retail for around $50 or so and they are faster than your entire machine, also i doubt you would be able to use any of todays vid cards in your pc.

you can prolly find a dell for around $300-400 its low end by todays standards but MUCH faster than what you have now.
