does kawaks 1.54 support controllers?

Yes it does. You need to load a game to map them though: Start Kawaks, load a game, then go to menu "Game" -> "Redefine Keys" -> "Redefine Keys Player 1". Now map the game input as you prefer.

A most consistent way it's to once you mapped you keys correctly and quit kawaks, go to "ini" subfolder, copy your "gamename.ini" to kawaks.exe folder. Then rename it as "defaultkeysMVS.ini" if it's a neogeo game, or "defaultkeysCPS.ini" if it's a CPS1-2 game. Now every game of that hardware would use your custom settings by default ;)
