Okay i downloaded MAME32 0.97(with intergrated frontend) and a downloaded that kinst file 4.3 mb(i think) then i put that zip file, not extracted or anything, in the ROMS folder next to that pad where it said "Dir". Now i run the emulator, and pick Killer Instinct 1.5d(the one i have i suppose) from the list of games and begins to load or look for the required files. It finds everything except this,
"kinst.chd". i do an Audit and it said SHA1(a37a2c5e52ea936a715210d237874dd573bb002f) MD5(6d4c2f152c9a18ab3a9b05b8804306a8)
"NOT FOUND"
Please someone help me. It would be highly appreciated.

Some games were made with a "hard drive". KI is one of them. The"CHD" file I believe means chunk hard data. The "CHD" file of the game is also required in the rom folder for the game to work. The CHD file for KI is split into four RAR files. You will need to get them all and merge them into one.

So are CHD files needed for every MAME rom?

No, the majority of them do not have hard drives or anything like that.
