The DivX 5.2.1 (not Pro) is free and that's the one I've been using my entire life :)

To convert mpg to avi (DivX) You need a program called TMPGEnc

wait a sec is avi the same thing as DivX cuz im not so sure im jus trying to find a format that is smaller than mpg and avi cuz that most the files that i have and want to be smaller b4 i copy to save space

AVI is a container, DivX is a video codec.

So you want a smaller file size.

Try to convert at an average bitrate (512 - 780 kbps should be fine) and mp3 with wav header sound, because the only audio format that avi accepts is wav.

I use Virtualdub (virtualdub.org) to do this. You'll need to install a DivX codec (divx.com) and then you'll be able to convert almost everything to DivX (newer versions of virtual dub don't support Windows Media due to legal issues).
