hi. pretty new to this emulation stuff, so i have a question for you.
i have the FCE Ultra emulator, and i play super mario 3. but how do i save my progresses? do i ned another emulator or what?
hope somebody can give me an answer!

You can't save your progress in the NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3, but you can do a save state instead.

Yes, you can. You can save your progress like in the real NES. Just define a save folder, where a .sav file will be created by the FCEultra and compatible with many others emulators.
That file will have the same name as your rom, for example, if you're playing "Super Mario Bros 3 (U).nes" or .zip, , the save/battery file will be named "Super Mario Bros 3 (U).sav"
