What are your opinions on Savestates in emulators? I've been doing a lot of retro gaming recently, and I realized, Savestates take away the essence of failure from the original game, and makes things more trial and error than fun. What are your thoughts?

1) I think being I'm older now and dont have the time to invest in a game they are justified. I used to have the time to complete a section of a game now anything can take me front it. Being able to save at any point, is essential for me now.
2) Emulators are not always perfect and do crash, save states are your only rescue.
3) saved data can get deleted or corrupt. Nice to have a back up.

I kinda have to agree with Ulao on this one. Since Ive started working, ive had less and less time to play games, and having a save state helps a lot.

Some older games don't allow you to save the game and are expected to be completed in a single play through, such as Castlevania for the NES. In this instance I don't want to be forced to play a game through till the end. This is when I'll use save states, or if i forget to save the game and the save state was automatically generated.

In the end, it's just what you make it out to be... if you just use save states as a backup, using it only when the game would save or you have to quit playing, it won't turn into a trial and error frenzy. But if you can't take the challenges the game throws at you, and you use save states to beat it... it's your own choice to "reduce your fun"
