I need help with creating some VBA codes for a Pokemon Red rom hack

Ok, so I recently decided to try out a new rom hack of Pokemon Red for Gameboy. I thought that, to speed the action up a little, I would make myself an EXP modifier code. Using VBA's cheat search feature, I've found the address for experience gained in battle. However, I can't seem to get the thing to modify. I've tried basically every combination of options, but I can't get the EXP gained to actually change! Is there something I'm missing here? I would attach a screenshot proving I've found the right address, but as a new forum member I'm not allowed to pot links in comments.

What rom hack are you using?
And what version of VBA are you running?

I'm playing Banette's Red 151 romhack, as found on the Pokecommunity forums. My version of VBA is 1.8.0. As said in the first post, I can find the address for EXP earned, but I can't get the value to change. I save a code, and the value doesn't change.
