Hey guys I'm totally new to this emulator business and didn't know about them until about 2 days ago. I am completely new to this so I realize this question is totally newb.

I just want to get an emulator for NES and whenever I try to download one my computer asks me what program I want to open the new file with. I have no idea. If anyone could help I would be extremely grateful. Thanks.

Files distributed through the Emulator Zone are usually stored in a .ZIP format, which means you will need a decompression program. Such programs can be obtained at www.winzip.com or www.rarsoft.com - both have a trial period and all that, but I believe they both just nag you with a reminder screen and never really stop working.

Once you open the file with either Winzip or WinRAR, you can extract the files for the emulator to wherever you want to store it, and then run the program from there. A lot of the options are pretty straight forward in NES emulators (and most emulators in particular). You may have to do things like configure your keys for the controller and whatnot. Consult the readme.txt files and such that come with the emulators if you need more help; or post further questions ont he forum if they aren't particularly stupid and you are actually stumped.

Once you have your emulator setup you still need games. These are distributed in a file format, for NES games they usually carry the .NES extension (but may be distributed inside a ZIP or RAR file, like emulators). Game files are often reffered to as "ROMS". We cannot give you links to ROMS or tell you where to get them; this you have to do on your own. Google is a good place to start.
