Imagehost.org Died!

Yes people. The Imagehost.com has died for the following reasons:

Imagehost.org said:
Finance issues. ImageHost.org was a free image hosting service that was supported by the advertisements you see on the site. While this went fine for a while, recently ad income plummeted to a level where the ad income isn't even covering the cost of the servers anymore. And I am not a charity, so this a critical problem.

Server issues. While in the past two weeks the servers operated reasonbly well, it was sometimes a nightmare to keep the servers up and running. This is a problem that would have just gotten more difficult if the service had grown any larger and needed more servers.

Time. I run ImageHost.org as a part-time activity (I'm a student). However keeping illegal content off the site & other administration duties are taking more time than I had enticipated.

Abuse. Did you know that out of the 410,000 images on the site right now over 13,000 have been deleted due to some kind of abuse or another? Now it's not really that annoying to keep porn images off the site. But what was especially annoying was getting angry mail from my server providers about images that were used in spam and phishing emails. This has even caused one of the ImageHost.org servers to be disconnected by my provider at one time.

Alternative Sites...

Rest in peace :verysad:

I wonder how much of it was due to the people of EZ. I didn't even know it was back up.

It had nothing to do with EZ. This was a standalone version.

Imagehost was a good, high quality tool, but also an example of why we can't really expect something /good/ for nothing on the 'net.

The largest problem was(and still is) the cost and as the announcement says, it's no charity.

Well if I get of my lazy ass I might put together a "registration only" version of ImageHost
that will have pretty much the same features (and maybe some more).

I must also note that the financial part was just a _part_ of the problem as I mention on that page.
There are also the porn uploaders, spammers, phishers, damn chinese who can't read the TOS
and upload something that's then hit 20,000 times in one hour (the only limit being that the server
was on a 10mbit port).

Now if IH ever comes back I'm thinking about making it invitation only like Gmail. That way,
the only way new people can sign up is through their friends. And if they misbehave, I can
(if necessary only) can make people responsible for the friends they invite to the service.
But I'm thinking to far ahead again... it's al just ideas right now. Like AnimeSuki "v2". That
has been mostly an idea for 8+ months now.

And one more thing, for as long as it lasts:

Why would you make the person who invited them responsible instead of just disabling the account of whoever broke a rule? I'm just glad you've stopped thinking logically recently.

You should try reading his post again. Focus on the bold part of the text, that's a huge IF.
And if they misbehave, I can (if necessary only) can make people responsible for the friends they invite to the service.
Besides that, nobody will force you to use it even if that special rules does exist as there are many alternatives.

What? What's wrong with you, seriously Lefteris. You've convinced me you don't understand ANYTHING AT ALL.

Despite the fact that it's a "huge IF" he outlined it as a possiblity. I didn't say it would only be stupid if he did it, I said it was a stupid thing to think about and/or post. I also offered a much more reasonable and intelligent solution. Damn.

It's a terrible stupid idea regardless of its implementation.

Mmkay, maybe it's not such a good idea. I also wasn't planning on applying that rule if just
ONE "invitee" broke some rules, but if someone "gives accounts" to people who break the rules
all the time. And in that case perhaps the first step is to not allow that person to "invite" more
people, but not be restricted otherwise in using the service.

The reason I thought of that system is because I want to prevent some anonymous John Doe
to sign up and then abuse things badly. With an invitation system, at least the person who
invites other people has some idea what kind of people he is inviting, thereby making the
chance for abusers to sign up smaller.
