Pokemon Pearl Runs Extremely Slow

I downloaded a ROM for Pokemon Pearl and I noticed that it ran extremely slow. Why and how can I make it faster?

Edit: I'm using DesmuMe, and my computer has 4 GB of Ram and a Quad-core intel processor. I'm also using the North American version.
