Emulator Problem: Dolphin isn't recognizing my gamepad

Hi, so I'm new to this whole site and the only real reason I signed up is because I need with something that I just can't seem to figure out.

I finally got around to figuring out how to work Dolphin (not so much figuring out as it was googling how to) and it works fine. I have one problem. My gamepad doesn't work with it. It works fine with VisualBoy and zSnes but Dolphin won't let me use it. It recognizes that there's a paddle there, but it won't let me assign the buttons. I want to use the pad, because SSBM is quite hard with a keyboard.

So, am I doing something wrong or do I need a plug-in? Or could it possibly be a computer or paddle problem? The paddle's just a basic Madcatz controller.

I'd be much obliged to anyone who is willing to help me.

more then likely you forgot to set the port type. Options->config->gamecube->port-1 ( set to standard controller ). Though if you continue to have troubles the dolphin team is really helpful on the forums there. I'd suggest following up with them if this is not the answer you need.
