Can anyone tell me what the button assignment would be, for Street Fighter II player 2... 6 button layout? Also do you know if the original arcade game had 8 way or 4 way joysticks? Thanks, in advance.

Guessing you playing in mame.

Fist from the wiki on sf2

Like in the original, the game's controls uses a configuration of an eight-directional joystick and six attack buttons. The player uses the joystick to jump, crouch and move the character towards or away from the opponent, as well as to guard the character from an opponent's attacks.

now in mame the buttons 1,2,3 are the top buttons, and 4,5,6 are the bottom.

So you would want to map the punches like so
(1)Light, (2)Medium (3)Heavy
and same for kicks 4,5,6.

Thank you very much and I got that. But what keys on the keyboard do I map buttons 1-6 too? eg. button 1 = x, Button 2 = <Alt>d, etc.

well that is up to how you would play? If it were me I'd match the real layout and use like so
ins,home,pageUp
del,end,pageDown
matching
light, med, hard ( punches )
light, med hard ( kicks)

So you would get
1 = ins
2 = home
3 = p_up
4 = del
5 = end
6 = p_down

Start the game, press tab, choose 'inputs (this game)', and you can see what actions are assigned to which keys by default.
