New to emulators

Hello! I am new to using emulators and I am trying to play various gameboy games. The emulator I am using is VisualBoy 1.7.4 and the problem I am having is that when I try to open any rom the emulator crashes. I am running a macOSX 10.5.8

Any advice is appreciated!

Additional info:

To be exact; its Visual Boy Advance 1.7.4 and I am trying to play Pokemon roms that were originally for regular gameboy.

Are you using the correct version for MacOSX? There are loads of builds of VBA. Go to their website and double check. It should run original GB games without any issue.

Yea I'm pretty sure it is. I'll delete and reinstall just to make sure
