Trying to play arcade games online plz help! ; ;

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Let's say I launched Kawaks and wanted to play Marvel vs Capcom online. I pick netplay, wait for it to ping all avaliable servers, find the server which is hosting that game and is waiting, then connect to that server. Now I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do after I've connected to that server. Once connected I've tried hitting cancel so I can load up Marvel vs Capcom but eveything gets really laggy and it wont let me load up Kawaks or anything. Am I supposed to just wait for Kawaks to boot the game by itself or what? I need answers plz.

Also how do I go about hosting my own game?

You need to be on a fast connection to use that(not 56k) otherwise there is going to be lag.

Ok but how am I supposed to join a game? I have DSL by the way.
