Help! VisualBoy Advance 1.8

I've downloaded this emulator but when I open the .exe file, the window that appears is black! What do I do to play Pokemon!

Select 'File' from the toolbar, then 'Open' then select the game rom you want to play. The emulator doesn't come with any games pre-loaded, you have to get roms of the original cartridges to play on it.
However commercial game roms are subject to copyright and the rules at this site prohibit discussion of how or where to obtain them.
