Trying to use a controller with Project64

I bought an xbox adapter for my computer, and was curious if and how I can use it with the project64 emulator. I went to options and controller configuration and selected my xbox controller, but its not working. Also what does the deadzone mean.

You have to configure the keys after selecting the controller.
