how do i get mame to save my high scores as when i come out of the game it resets the score board

Core mame stopped supporting the hiscore dat several versions ago. Games that saved their scores when switched off in real life will still save them in Mame.

There are a couple of ways to get around it. One is to compile your own version of Mame and stick the hiscore support back in (google for that one) the other is to use a build like MameFX that still supports the hi score dat file.
