PSP to PSONE convertion

I Have read and do understand how to make PSONE games work in you PSP. But is the vice versa possible? Can you convert you PSP game to run on a PSONE?

I was reading some of the forum notes saying that the PS3 is backwards convertible, meaning it plays PS2 games. Is that true, because as far as I knew that was not the case. I am debating buying a PS3 or a Xbox 360, and if that were to be tru the scale would bit tip towards the PS3, since I already have over 30 PS2 games.

I don't know all the specifics, but from what I've read all PS3's will play PSX games but only certain models can play PS2 games.
