I have all the revisions of this game along with the parent rom for the arcade version of this game. I just started playing the game to relive the arcade experience. The graphics aren't quite as sharp as the real arcade version, but i can let that slide. Anyways i noticed during game play the sound comes in and out. Also the game speed is quite slow. I know the arcade version was not this sluggish. Anything i can do to get the game back up to speed? I wonder if the speed was corrected when the bootleg versions were taken outta the equasion? Cause the boot files sped up the game or so i heard.

This is old computer you have but it should run Mortal Kombat II just fine. I had Geforce4 MX 440 256mb with pentium 4 before but not anymore because I have new powerful computer on the way but your computer can run this game without a problem. :)

I do believe it has 256 mb of RAM that should be enough to run this game. I will try again today and see how it runs. I have been having some registry problems so some functions have been slow e.g. internet and flash online video play from time to time.

Is everything ok ?

It should be. I used Advanced Windows Cleaner two days ago. The game should work fine. I did close out some uneeded programs and that sped up the game a bit. The audio however is still stutters. I am shocked my computer won't play this game right. I also use PJ64 a N64 emulator and it handles most of those games just fine.

Mame had a video rewrite at version 0.107 that beefed the required specs up significantly and the current recommended spec for newer versions of mame is a 2Ghz procesor and 1Gb of ram.

Bear in mind that 256Mb is the minimum recommended spec just to run Windows XP.

If you use a version of mame <0.107 then things should run significantly faster. Old versions of mame32 can be found here www.joymonkey.com.

Hope that helps.

What is the point of beefing up specs? Most of the older games like this shouldn't need that right? Is there a way to get these games to look better? They look a little pixelated not too smooth.

Get yourself an ArcadeVGA graphics card (http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html) and hook it up to an arcade monitor.

In the mame display options (in mameUI this is 'options'>'default game options'>'display') use D3D and enable bilinear filtering this will eliminate the pixelated appearance.

The specs beef up as the emulation becomes more accurate. Mame is primarily an archival project so they are constantly working to get the games emulated and running as authentically as they did on the real hardware. The playability and system specs required are very much a secondary concern where mamedev are concerned. The more accurate and complex the emulation gets, the more your PC has to do, meaning it needs to be faster to maintain performance.

Current versions of Mame will still run perfectly well on a 2Ghz processor and 1Gb of Ram and any DX9 compatible graphics card so any PC from the last 4 years or so shouldn't have too many issues.

All older versions of mame remain available for download for people who want to run it on very old hardware, as with anything and everything that runs on a PC if you want to use more up to date software you need to have a more up to date computer..

Fat Trucker getting an older version of MAME has helped with the graphics. When playing Mortal Kombat II and III. When playing Mortal Kombat II the only problem is with the sound. When attacking the sound seems to repeat itself and is not insync with the players actions. What can i do to fix this problem? Is there a way to play MAME32 107.9 with a joypad? Once again thanks to those that have given advice and info so far. :)

Try enabling triple buffering to correct the sound issue. Its caused by a refresh rate mismatch between the game and whatever display you are running it on, so you can also try pressing the tilde key (normally above tab and next to '1' in the top left corner of your keyboard) use the cursor keys to change to the games refresh settings and set it to 60hz.

Alright i hope this works. The graphics on the arcade version are so much better than any console port too. MK II and 3 to be exact. Another question. How do i enable joy pad useage on MAME 107.9? I actually might get a joystick thing so has a more arcade feel. Can that be used at all?

MameUI/32 - Go to options, default options, controllers, enable joystick.

Commandline Mame - Open the mame.ini file scroll down to Control Options and change the '0' next to the joystick entry to a '1', then save it.

Enabling Triple Buffering didn't fix the sound problem when Playing Mortal Kombat II. I guess i can live with it. Everything else works just fine. The only thing is when i try to jump using the joypad it doesn't work. I can only jump by using arrow keys on my keyboard.

Are you running on an LCD monitor?. Usually these have a fixed refresh @ 60Hz which causes the majority of sound issues. Try lowering you desktop res slightly to see if the monitor will allow you to increase the refresh to 75hz which should fix the problem.

It could also be that you are using the refreshspeed option. This forces the game to output @ exactly 60hz, a lot of monitors that report 60hz are actually running at a slightly lower rate 59.6hz or whatever. This causes a synch issue and the sound stuttering is the game setting itself back in synch every now and again.

Basically you need your monitor to be running at a faster refresh than the game to resolve the issue.

It is an older monitor. Made for a Dell PC dated back to 2000-2001. I think it is an LCD. Will try lowering the resolution. Thanks again Trucker.

The problem is that with refreshspeed enabled mame outputs at exactly 60hz for most LCD displays, however many LCD displays run fractionally below a full 60hz so you need to increase the refresh rate if your monitor will let you. Some LCD's allow this by lowering the screen res.
