I've heard people say that ePSXe is better, but as far as I can tell the project is dead. As such I've been looking at pSX, the "next-best" thing. How well does everything work compared to ePSXe?

PSX plays perfectly well and is far less complicated to set up. The primary difference between the two emulators is that while ePSXe employs a number of plug-ins and filters that enhance the games graphics, PSX displays them as they were originally which admittedly doesn't always look great on a high res monitor.

yes but the point of emulation should be to accurately emulate the graphics. if your computer has a svideo output ,you can plug into a tv and you will find the image looks identical to an actual PlayStation. in fact if you where to hook a PlayStation up to an lcd tv it would look the same as it does on the computer with an lcd monitor.

The 'point' of emulation varies from person to person depending on what they prefer.
A lot of people find the games more enjoyable with slight enhancement and filtering to the graphics, also very few people run their PC's on CRT TV's so many of the enhancements and filters are there to display the game closer to the way it originally looked when someone is running it on a high res display.
Running natively on a high res monitor can actually make the game look worse than it did originally meaning the filters actually achieve a more accurate image than running without them.

Oh and EPSXE isn't dead, it's just it's achieved it's most perfect form, although slight bugs and errors are being fixed, making other games more compatable there's basically no point.
