PS3 hacking

Im thinking of getting a PS3, but I really dont want to get one unless it can play backups.

Does anyone know if a PS3 can play burnt backups an/or .ISOs off the harddrive without a modchip?
Kinda like the PSP, using hacked firmware

Nah not atm. People are working on it, but I think its going to be a difficult thing to accomplish. PS3 hasnt been much of a target for hackers because it can run Linux out of the box.

Current the only machines that can run retail PS3 ISOS from the HDD are Development PS3's. Even then you have to jump through several hoops before you can run it....
