Setting up a gamepad for MAME0.122

Hello everyone, I just recently discovered the joy of MAME about a week ago. My first copy of MAME was the 0.95 release. Everything worked fine, but it didn't support all of the games I had. So today I upgraded to the newest release, 0.122, after getting my games working again, I seem to be unable to get my gamepads to work. I'm using two ps2 controllers hooked up via two radioshack adapters. Is there some sort of config file I need to edit or what? I need to get my Metal Slug fix :(

Well, I was looking around MAME32s website, and learned that by default joysticks are disable and I can change this in the mame.ini file. One problem though, I looked around and I don't even have a mame.ini file. Anyone know whats up?
