Is it possible to open a ROM and copy the images (sprites and backgrounds) from it? (Aside from taking screen shots and editing them)

Yes, you can rip them using hex editor tools. I don't know any though.

Here is what you need (http://www.romhacking.net/?category=10&Platform=&game=&author=&os=&level=&perpage=20&page=utilities&utilsearch=Go&title=&desc=)

All these programmes are for working on the graphics of ROMs. I recommend Tile Layer Pro but don't restrict yourself to just one, I use several.

Although I may still need to make screenshots and stuff.

Wow, that would pretty time consuming. Are you looking for a certain set of sprites. There are tons of websites that already host many types of sprites to save you the agony of what was suggested above.

Very true but achieving things yourself is so much more satisfying than copying others. Plus it's useful to have the skills to do it yourself incase the sprite your looking for can't be found.

If you just need a couple you can find online and no more then I'd probably just pinch them off the net otherwise learn how to do it yourself.
