Controller question

Hey all. I'm a real noob when it comes to emulators and how they work. I downloaded nestopia to play some original Super Mario Brothers, but my USB controllers don't seem to work.

I checked the control panel, and the controllers(USB power pads) seemed to be working fine. Does anyone know if there are any steps I can take to solve this problem, or perhaps another NES emulator that recognizes usb controllers?

Most HID joysticks work fine. HID human interface device. Some fancy joysticks may give you trouble. For the most part make sure they work in the control panel and calibrate them if needed. I use jnes or zsnes. Rockness and FCE Ultra are also a good emulators. I dont really know that emulator well enough.
