Really confused emulator newbie =[ Please help

I'm really frustrated with this...I can't figure out where to get Pokemon Emerald...or just how to activate the gameplay, I have the window for the VBA up but it's just black and there are no options for cheats, so I'm guessing there's some place on the net...and I can't find it...to download these games...please help =[
