Hi,
I've been searching the web lately in search for a N64 emulator for the GP2X portable emulating system.
It appears that there isn't one available and that there are none currently under development as programmers claim the gp2x is incapable of running a nintendo 64 emulator.
Why is this? i really don't understand because of the following reasons...
1. The GP2X has a DUAL CORE 200mhz cpu and the N64 only has a single core 93.75mhz cpu.
2. The GP2X has 64mb ram where the N64 only has 4.
3. The GP2X is capable of displaying 65,536 colors on the screen at once where the N64 can only do 32,768 on screen at once.
4. The GP2X native resolution is 320x240... the N64 games where at a resolution of 256x224 to 640x480.
Now why couldnt the emulator be programmed to scale down the N64 games so they were playable on the GP2X hardware? even if the game was at the minimum 256x224... the GP2X scaling chip would just stretch the game to fit the screen anyway. Also... doesn't the extra ram and faster dual core cpu make up for something??? i know emulation is a very intensive process but even if games could be ported from the N64 to the GP2X it would make alot of people happy... not to mention its ALOT less intensive for the GP2X to process.
The N64 displayed games with 32-bit color depth... couldnt the emulator be programmed to render the games in a lower 24, 16 or even 8 bit color depth just so it was easier for the hardware to cope with?
Long story short... 10fps would be decent enough for alot of us to play N64 games on our GP2X consoles... and even though its not perfect... what is there to lose? i'm sure there would be many people willing to help with the project to tweak and test everything to get it that little bit slighter with every release of a new version... plus i'd happily support the project and maybe even donate to it as alot of others would too i bet...
What do you all think??? :)
