Gameboy Link Usage

I have been playing Pokemon Blue for the Gameboy emulator (BGB) and I am trying to use the link cable option over the internet. I just can't figure out how it works. I have a friend who is using the exact same emulator and exact same rom (because i sent it to him). How EXACTLY do you link up?

visualboyadvance is your best bet because no$gba link is only for gba and future of NDS and not gameboy games.

visualboyadvance played gameboy, gameboy color, and game boy advance.

Look around carefully before you ask the question.
