Rom Attribute Question (This is not a Request)

Hey all,

Just wanted to say hello! I am brand new to this forum and I figured maybe someone can help me with a question.

What do the attributes mean at the end of Game Title and before the file extension

Air Fortress (J) [a1].nes
Air Fortress (J) [a2].nes
Air Fortress (J) [b1].nes
Air Fortress (J) [hFFE].nes
Air Fortress (J) .nes
Air Fortress (J) [b1].nes
Air Fortress (E) .nes
Air Fortress (U) .nes


Well I figured out J=Japan, E=Europe, U=United States but as for the rest of them, what are those attributes .. because most of the time the files are the same size and i dont want reduntancy if the rom is exactly the same as the next.

Hopefully this question is not breaking any forum rules, for I am not requesting an actual rom, just was curious.

If you download GoodNES, it should have a readme explaining the codes.

I'll give you a tip though. You only want the ones with the country code in the title.. With the exception of prototypes (if you collect those) and different versions of the game (rev00, rev01). Revisions are usually legit releases with bugfixes or difficulty changes, etc..

I believe A is simply "alternate", B is a bad dump, and that's all I can recall off hand
