first off go get Eternal SPU sound plugin ePSXes plugin is garbage.... Next at the top click
Config>>Sound>>Configure(button)>>Under special fixes check box for Update before accessing register as it is needed for FFIX.
right.... i've been trying to do this for the last 3 hours and have nearly succeeded thanks to some useful threads
basically... i've now got the game disk 1 working, ... sortof. it went through the first fmv, through the first battle (overly-quick though!) and when my character walks into the room with the others automatically after battle, it just plays the music and i get no screen and cannot do anything...
i'm running the patch, the plugins are:
Pete's D3D Driver 1.47 - video
ePSXe SPU core 1.5.2. - sound
SaPu's CD-ROM Plugin 1.0 - cd-rom
its 3:30 and i'm tired... i hope theres someone here who knows whats wrong lol.
okay.... its now 4:30, and more progress... if i run the game really fast the bits where it crashes seem less bad as they eventually move on to the next bit. however in the interest of fun i dont want to play the game really fast. its when certain noises occur such as when selecting new game, or the 'start battle' noise
any ideas?

this game is Copy protected so i do not know any emulators that will play it that good
I bought the game very recently (under the Square-Enix license) and I can play it on PSXeven nearly perfectly. Only two problems I've ever gotten are grainy framebuffer effects and a slightly distorted overworld.
Missionite: If the game is running too fast, adjust the frame limit to auto. Like Dude said, Eternal SPU will work better for FF9. Posting your GPU config and your PC info may also help.

Yeh i play it on ePSXe just fine as Xiedo said. But there was only 1 thing for me and it was the distorted overworld.
