Please Help

Ok, I'm new to this emulation stuff on a computer. I have the latest project64 from this site. I have a Super Mario 64 ROM. Well i'm ordering a adaptoid and a real N64 controller off the internet. But those aren't going to arrive till a month. So in the mean time i wanted to play using my keyboard. I go to options --->configure controller plugin. I see all the buttons but none of them work. I'm pressing all the buttons on my keyboard and nothing. I've searched around for answers but could not find any. On all the games i play i see "NO CONTROLLER" and i can't do anything. Please help me. sorry for any trouble. thanks in advance to all those who help.

make sure that the option for controller 1 is plugged in.
