I went through the same steps. I got till the New Game option.
The code I *think* we found, was on some thread, on another site, there was an avoid blue-screen code that was relevant only to the Japanese version.
So this Youtube user finally discovered these awesome codes, and it works.
Oh, and my settings were VGA (Poppy bright) for GBA Mode, Auto for GBA Cartridge BackUp Media, FLASH 512KBytes for NDS-Cartridge BackUp Media.
It froze the screen on the other options, but this worked for moi.
