Issue with snes Chrono Trigger

Hi, I'm fairly new here, and if this is not in the right forum, I am so sorry.

I played Chrono Trigger a couple years ago, and was wanting to play again, but since then I had switched computers and os and all of the sudden the game runs but when I try to bring up the start menu the game pauses as it normally would, but no menu appears, and then if the start button is re-pressed, then the game continues as normal.... So, no start menu... And it's not the game or the emulator, as I tried several different emulators, and downloaded the rom, assuming that my copy had gotten corrupted... But it's neither of those...
I'm kind of assuming that it's a filter that I have turned off or something weird like that, but could somebody please point me in the right direction?
