VBA gameshark issues

Now, I have gone and looked about this forum and other sites and nobody seems to have an answer, so I'm gonna try actually asking. (How about that?)
Anyways, I start up a game, open up the cheat list, imput a gameshark code, and it looks at me and goes, "That code is not in the right format. The right format is XXXXXXXXYYYYYYYY." Every code I've found has been 12 characters long, and it's asking for a 16 character long code.... Is there something everyone knows that I'm just missing like adding four 0s to the front, or something else? I'd really like to know how to make this work, especially since the cheat search function doesn't seem to be working either......
