Stop adding desktop icons?

Every time I play a ROM it leaves these icons on my desktop:

I think this has something to do with when I save a state in a game, but not sure.
Why is this happening, and how can I stop it?
Also, how can I specifiy to save state files in a particular directory?

That's because you set your desktop as the main Gens directory. The effective way is to put all Gens files into a directory, for example, C:\Gens\ and then create a shortcut to Gens on your desktop.

Make sure you go check the program options too, so you know it's pointing to the right place
